She Speaks with the Ocean, 2023, Martha’s Vineyard Museum

She Speaks with the Ocean has been a yearlong conversation between Wilson and several island women scientists including Emma Green Beach, Dani Ewart and Carole Vandal on Marthas Vineyard.

Each scientist offers a different natural world view and their stewardship takes a different form. This includes marine biology propagation, enforcing fishing regulations, and indigenous land rights and the belief that nature contains spirit and the capacity to heal.  Each woman scientist has a connection to the Vineyard and is engaged in deep work around the health and well-being of a watershed.Through these partnerships Wilson invites us through an immersive installation including sounds and sights of water; including a mock-lab where algae grows and artistic photographs of Wilson collecting algae herself; a box of keys filled with notorious and gated Island beaches, the sounds of a woman scientist playing flute in the ocean, abstracted and colorful maps of the ponds and the fish they contain. The exhibition culminates with the question, “how do you speak with the ocean” and the opportunity to share within the exhibit.
